Letters inviting submissions are sent out to specified theatres biennially in early January.
Plays are due February 15.

The Theatre must:

  1. Be listed as a partnering Theatre.

The Playwright must:

  1. Have had a prior minimum of three (different) full-length plays fully produced by fully professional theatres. The minimum of three may not include a musical, monologue, solo-act, short one act (less than 75 minutes), translation, play for children, or adaptation.  They will not have been written by playwright collaboration.
  2. Be an U.S. Citizen or U.S. permanent resident.

The Submitted Play:

  1. Is expected to be a full-length play (fully produced by a fully professional theatre).  It is the playwright’s fourth or beyond play, already having met the prior minimum of three, described above.  It shall not be a musical, monologue,  solo-act, short one act (less than 75 minutes), translation, play for children, or adaptation.
  2. Will not have been written by playwright collaboration.
  3. May be either a Produced or Unproduced work.
    • To be considered a Produced work, its premiere production must have occurred after January 1, 2010 and no later than (upcoming) June 30, 2012.*/**
    • Unproduced work will not have had its premiere production prior to September 15, 2012.

*Dates refelect a move towards the 2014 Prize where we will consider submissions more closely by season, rather than year. This 2012, acceptable production dates include those plays falling late into the 2009/2010 season (which were not eligible for the 2010 Prize) as well as seasons 2010/2011 and 2011/2012.

**Those theatres with a 2011/12 season running late into the summer, wishing to submit a play with its premiere date falling after June 30, 2012, should contact us regarding its eligibility year (2012 or 2014).

A theatre may submit one play per Prize cycle for consideration; multiple theatres may not submit the same play. (It is possible for a playwright to have more than one play submitted for consideration.)

Note: The foregoing notwithstanding, The Prize may extend additional invitations to submit.
